Tourlane named Mexico City the World Cultural Capital for 2026, beating London, Dublin, Berlin, and Edinburgh. The city's audiovisual industry generates nearly 300 billion Mexican pesos in gross production, the largest creative production hub in Latin America. Mexico's cultural sector employed 1.43 million people in 2024, generating 2.8% of national GDP. The city is home to more than 40 art museums, 110 galleries, and dozens of history and science institutions, one of the highest concentrations of any metropolis in the world. The National Museum of Anthropology received 3.7 million visitors in 2024 and surpassed 5 million in 2025, the year it also won the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.



Events:

Zona Maco 2026 brought together more than 200 galleries from 27 countries across four continents, drawing 82,000 attendees and cementing Mexico City Art Week as one of the essential dates on the global art calendar alongside Basel, Frieze, and the Venice Biennale. Netflix continues expanding at Estudios Churubusco, turning the city into the world's primary production hub for Spanish-language content.


Trends:

Mexico City is living its most cosmopolitan moment in modern history. International creatives, digital nomads, and tech companies have layered new global energy over an already extraordinary cultural foundation. Roma, Condesa, and Juárez have become laboratories where affordability still allows creative experimentation that more expensive cities have lost.



Drivers:

Three thousand years of layered civilization in a single geography. Aztec heritage, colonial architecture, modernist muralism, and contemporary art are not separate chapters, they are one continuous story. Add the largest Spanish-speaking consumer market in the world and a cost of living that still allows artists of every economic condition to live at the city's center.
